TIMELINE

timeline-hrz.jpg

The redevelopment of 1105 Martin Luther King Jr. Way is rooted in a commitment to healing, equity, and community leadership. We recognize that development in Hilltop has too often caused harm—through broken promises, displacement, and decisions made without the people most affected. Homestead Community Land Trust acquired this property to take a different approach—one that centers community voice, acknowledges past harms, and supports long-term belonging. In partnership with Aya Community Land Trust, a Hilltop-focused nonprofit, we are building on years of community visioning to shape what comes next. This site will become permanently affordable housing and a hub for neighborhood life—designed not only to serve present needs but to protect Hilltop’s cultural and economic identity for future generations. This is about more than housing—we seek to support repair, trust, and a shared future shaped by the people who live here.

Our engagement process will unfold in phases throughout 2025 and 2026. Community surveys, listening sessions, and small group interviews will begin in late summer, with findings compiled and reviewed over the fall and winter. Concept planning for redevelopment will start in early 2026, shaped by the values and priorities identified by the community. Final design, permitting, and financing will follow. Because affordable housing developments often take longer than market-rate projects—due to complex funding and public approval processes—new housing at this site may take 3–5 years to complete. In the meantime, we are committed to making the site available for community use and keeping the public informed every step of the way.

TAKE THE SURVEY

Over the years, Hilltop neighbors have shared bold visions for 1105 MLK—homes, businesses, and spaces that reflect the heart of this community. It's been a minute, so we’re now updating that input to guide the next phase of planning. This short survey helps prioritize what matters most today. Your responses will shape the future of this site and how we work with public partners to make it happen. Your answers are anonymous, but if you include your name and contact info, you’ll be entered into a drawing: two $500 top prizes and dozens more will be awarded. Deadline: October 30th. Winners announced by November 7, 2025.
