1105 Martin Luther King Jr. Way has long been a cornerstone of Hilltop’s landscape—shaped by many uses and many hands. Once home to a gas station, auto repair shop, grocery store, and later a Rite Aid. When Rite Aid closed, the building sat vacant behind a fence—until a nonprofit, responding to the guidance of a community advisory group, reopened it as a space for visual and performing artists and arts education.
While the previous owner was not able to move redevelopment forward, the site remains filled with possibility. Homestead Community Land Trust acquired the property with the intention of honoring the years of visioning and effort already invested by Hilltop residents. Today, we are working in formal partnership with Aya Community Land Trust to support community engagement, provide local stewardship, and ensure that the future of this block reflects the culture, values, and aspirations of those who call Hilltop home.
